Mariana Islands: College and Career Policies

In order for a license to be renewed, teachers must prove completion of Praxis exams.

Renewing an administrative certificate is like applying for an initial certificate.

The Mariana Islands has not adopted any professional development standards.

The English Language Arts Program guides the framework for curricular and instructional practices in Reading and Language development in English across all content areas from kindergarten through the 12th grade, preparing students to be successfully literate in the 21st- century. The curricular thrust is directed by the Common Core Standards and are adapted accordingly based on school resources and student needs. Students who meet these standards readily undertake the close, attentive reading that is at the heart of understanding and enjoying complex works of literature. Additionally, students will habitually perform the critical reading necessary to pick carefully through the staggering amount of information available today in print, digital and in multimedia formats.

The Mariana Islands have adopted Next Generation Science Standards.

The Social Studies Program integrates the social sciences and humanities to promote civic competence and participation. The curriculum is dynamic in order to prepare students for a society where change is rapid and constant. The realities of a globally interdependent world require students to understand their historical roots and draw upon historical knowledge. Students must learn to solve problems facing their local communities as well as emerging global issues. The Social Studies Standards and Benchmarks provide opportunities for students to develop skills in making not only personal choices but also economic choices based on limited resources. Students need preparation to face persistent dilemmas in our democracy.

In order to be certified in the Mariana Islands, applicants must have at least a bachelor's degree from an accredited institution and passed both the Praxis I and II.

The Mariana Islands Board of Education has authority over teacher certification.
