In order to become a certified teacher in West Virginia, an applicant must hold at least a bachelor's degree, pass the required tests, earn a specified GPA, and complete an approved teacher preparation program.

10.1.b.1 General criteria - An Initial Professional Teaching Certificate may be issued to a person who has completed: 1) the minimum of a bachelor's degree or a master's degree as specified in appendix A through an accredited institution of higher education; 2) the general requirements specified in 126-136-9; 3) the minimum GPA specified in 126-136-9.8a; 4) the tests specified in 126-136-10.1.b.3.E; 5) the conditions for issuance identified in 126-136-10.1.a.3.
