Additional Graduation Requirements

Massachusetts requires 8 additional credits for graduation in foreign languages, arts, and additional core classes. Students are also required to pass a competency determination.


In addition to meeting local requirements for graduation, students must achieve a “Competency Determination” to receive a diploma, which is a proficient score on the English/language arts and Mathematics tests based on tenth grade standards, or a needs improvement score on said tests and the completion of an Education Proficiency Plan; and passing one of the high school science and technology/engineering tests in Biology, Chemistry, Introductory Physics, or Technology/Engineering, through the class of 2019.

Additionally students must complete:
-2 years of the same Foreign Language;
-1 year of the Arts; and,
-5 additional “core” courses.

Students can also partake in additional learning opportunities, such as Advanced Placement and work-based learning.
