Virgin Islands - Student Assessments: Mathematics

The assessments that are required are: Virgin Island Territorial Assessments of Learning (VITAL) and affiliate member of SBAC.


The USVI has worked to meet requirements from both the current version of the Elementary and Secondary Education Act (ESEA), the No Child Left Behind Act of 2001 (NCLB), and the preceding version of the law, the Improving America’s Schools Act of 1994 (IASA). The USVI has completed revisions of its K-12 mathematics standards. The USVI implemented aligned Territorial assessments in mathematics, including alternate assessments for eligible students, in grades 5, 7, and 11 in March 2005. The Territorial assessment system was expanded to include additional aligned assessments in grades 3, 4, 6, and 8 in 2006. Thus, most work on the academic content standards, student academic achievement standards, and assessments necessary to meet requirements of the IASA as required under a compliance agreement with the U. S. Department of Education (ED) has been completed and work to meet the NCLB requirements is completed.
