State law requires teaching skills for a healthy life.

Minnesota Administrative Rules 3501.1400 Scope and Purpose.

The purpose of these Standard is to establish statewide Standard for physical education that govern instruction of students in kindergarten through grade 12. The state of Minnesota's Standard for physical education are the current Standard developed by SHAPE America (Society of Health and Physical Educators).

Minnesota Statutes 120B.021 Required academic Standard.

Subdivision 1. Required academic Standard. (c) The department must adopt the most recent SHAPE America (Society of Health and Physical Educators) kindergarten through grade 12 Standard and benchmarks for physical education as the required physical education academic Standard. The department may modify and adapt the national Standard to accommodate state interest. The modification and adaptations must maintain the purpose and integrity of the national Standard. The department must make available sample assessments, which school districts may use as an alternative to local assessments, to assess students' mastery of the physical education Standard beginning in the 2018-2019 school year.
