California Education Code 51223.3 Courses of Study, Grades 7 to 12
(a) During the first revision of the physical education framework that occurs on or after January 1, 2011, the state board and the Curriculum Development and Supplemental Materials Commission shall include self-defense instruction and safety instruction in that framework for pupils in grades 7, 8, 9, 11, and 12. (b) As used in this section:
- (1) “Safety instruction” includes, but is not necessarily limited to, awareness and avoidance of potentially dangerous situations.
- (2) “Self-defense instruction” includes, but is not necessarily limited to, martial arts, boxing, and other defensive techniques.

California Education Code 51940 Prevention of Brain and Spinal Cord Injuries
The California Healthy Kids Resource Center, in consultation with the State Department of Education, shall review, acquire, and circulate curricula focused on the prevention of brain and spinal cord injuries for use, on a voluntary basis, by school districts maintaining kindergarten and any of grades 1 to 12, inclusive.
