State law addresses violence prevention
(3) Every public school that offers sexual health education must assure that sexual health education complies with existing requirements in the January 2005 guidelines for sexual health information and disease prevention developed by the department of health and the superintendent of public instruction. Specifically, sexual health education must attempt to achieve the objective “take responsibility for and understand the consequences of their own behavior” and the objective “avoid exploitive or manipulative relationships.” To do this, sexual health education programs should include age-appropriate information about the legal elements of sexual [sex] offenses under chapter 9A.44 RCW where a minor is a victim and the consequences upon conviction, as well as the other information required to be included in informational materials prepared pursuant to subsection (1) of this section. Public schools that offer sexual health education are encouraged to incorporate the materials developed under subsection (1) of this section into the curriculum.
(1) The superintendent of public instruction shall collect and disseminate to school districts information on and curricula for the coordinated program for the prevention of sexual abuse of students in kindergarten through twelfth grade, child abuse, and neglect established in RCW 28A.300.160. The superintendent shall also adopt rules addressing the prevention of sexual abuse of students in kindergarten through twelfth grade and child abuse for purposes of curricula used in public schools.
RCW 28A.300.185 Family preservation education program
The office of the superintendent of public instruction shall develop a family preservation education program model curriculum that is available to each of the school district boards of directors. The model curriculum shall be posted on the superintendent of public instruction's web site. The model curriculum shall include, but is not limited to, instruction on developing conflict management skills, communication skills, domestic violence and dating violence, financial responsibility, and parenting responsibility.
WAC 392-410-150 Sexual abuse prevention curricula
(1) Authority and purpose. The authority for this chapter is RCW 28A.300.150, which requires the superintendent of public instruction to adopt rules addressing the prevention of sexual abuse of students in kindergarten through twelfth grade and child abuse for purposes of curricula used in public schools. The purpose of this chapter is to address the prevention of child sexual abuse of students in kindergarten through twelfth grade for purposes of curricula used in public schools.
(b) “Child sexual abuse prevention” means the prevention of unwanted conduct of a sexual nature occurring once or repeatedly in youth in kindergarten through twelfth grade. This may include, but is not limited to, the following:
(i) Sexual abuse;
(ii) Sexual exploitation;
(iii) Sexual violence; or
(iv) Sexual assault.
(c) “Child sexual abuse prevention curriculum” means written instructional materials used with students in kindergarten through twelfth grade for the purpose of child sexual abuse prevention during a unit of study expressly intended for that purpose.
