Health Education Teaches Skills for a Healthy Life
State law requires teaching knowledge, attitudes, and skills for making health-promoting decisions and healthy behaviors.
South Carolina Code of Laws 59-32-10. Definitions.
(1) "Comprehensive health education" means health education in a school setting that is planned and carried out with the purpose of maintaining, reinforcing, or enhancing the health, health-related skills, and health attitudes and practices of children and youth that are conducive to their good health and that promote wellness, health maintenance, and disease prevention. It includes age-appropriate, sequential instruction in health either as part of existing courses or as a special course.

Academic Standard
The academic Standard in this document describe what students should understand and be able to do. Each of the eight Standard is demonstrated with performance indicators at each grade level. Standard 1 is the traditional content and knowledge standard, while Standard 2 through 8 have skill emphasis.
The academic Standard set forth in this document were informed by and align to the National Health Academic Standard (NHES, 2007) and are as follows:
- "Standard 1: Students will comprehend concepts related to health promotion and disease prevention to enhance health.
- Standard 2: Students will analyze the influence of family, peers, culture, media, technology, and other factors on health behaviors.
- Standard 3: Students will demonstrate the ability to access valid information, products, and services to enhance health.
- Standard 4: Students will demonstrate the ability to use interpersonal communication skills to enhance health and avoid or reduce health risks.
- Standard 5: Students will demonstrate the ability to use decision-making skills to enhance health.
- Standard 6: Students will demonstrate the ability to use goal-setting skills to enhance health.
- Standard 7: Students will demonstrate the ability to practice health-enhancing behaviors and avoid or reduce health risks.
- Standard 8: Students will demonstrate the ability to advocate for personal, family, and community health.”
