State law requires districts to implement community service education or service learning programs, or encourages and offers student incentives for participation (e.g., recognition programs or course credit).
2017 Tennessee Code Annotated 49-6-413. Voluntary participation in community service.
(a) A student attending a public high school is encouraged to participate voluntarily in at least ten (10) hours of community service each semester that the student is in attendance. The community service shall comply with the rules promulgated by the state board of education under subsection (c).
(b) The public high school from which a student who participated each semester of attendance in community service that meets the specifications of subsection (a) graduates shall recognize the student's achievement at graduation by awarding a certificate of service, placing an appropriate designation on the student's diploma or other credential, providing a ribbon or cord to be worn with the graduation regalia, or recognizing the community service in another suitable manner.
(c) The state board of education shall promulgate rules to effectuate the purposes of this section. The rules shall be promulgated in accordance with the Uniform Administrative Procedures Act, compiled in title 4, chapter 5.
