State law authorizes districts to conduct mental health screening in schools or to disseminate information on mental health resources.

North Dakota Century Code 15.1-07-34. Youth behavioral health training to teachers, administrators, and ancillary staff

  1. Each school within a district shall designate an individual as a behavioral health resource coordinator.

  2. The superintendent of public instruction shall collaborate with regional education associations to disseminate information, training and instructional materials, and notice of training opportunities to school districts and nonpublic schools.

  3. The superintendent of public instruction shall maintain the contact information of the behavioral health resource coordinator in each school.

North Dakota Century Code 50-06-05.1. Powers and duties of the department.

The department has the following powers and duties to be administered by the department through its state office or regional human service centers, human service zones, or otherwise as directed by the department:

  • 28. To provide resources on mental health awareness and suicide prevention to the behavioral health resource coordinator at each school. The resources must include information on identifying warning signs, risk factors, and the availability of resources in the community.
