State law addresses National Physical Education Standards as a guide for providing PE or includes a list of all National PE standards without mentioning the standards by name.

Washington State K–12 Learning Standard for Health and Physical Education

While many of Washington state’s specific grade-level outcomes have been revised from the originals, the National Standard have been adopted verbatim as the Washington State Physical Education K–12 Learning Standard:

  • Standard 1: Students will demonstrate competency in a variety of motor skills and movement patterns.
  • Standard 2: Students will apply knowledge of concepts, principles, strategies, and tactics related to movement and performance.
  • Standard 3: Students will demonstrate the knowledge and skills to achieve and maintain a health-enhancing level of physical activity and fitness.
  • Standard 4: Students will exhibit responsible personal and social behavior that respects self and others.
  • Standard 5: Students will recognize the value of physical activity for health, enjoyment, challenge, self-expression, and social interaction.

Washington State K–12 Learning Standard for Health and Physical Education

SHAPE America’s (Society for Health and Physical Educators) National Standard define what a student should know and be able to do as result of a quality physical education program. States and local school districts across the country use the National Standard to develop or revise existing Standard, frameworks, and curricula.
