State law requires high school PE curriculum.

Administrative Rules of South Dakota 24:43:11:02. General requirements for high school graduation.

The units of credit required for high school graduation must include the following:

  • (8) One-half unit of physical education;
  • (9) One-half unit of health or health integration; and

Administrative Rules of South Dakota 24:53:07:23. K-12 physical education program.

The required courses and experiences of a K-12 physical education program shall meet the SHAPE (Society of Health and Physical Educators) America National Standard for Initial Physical Education Teacher Education, 2017 edition.

The program shall require candidates to demonstrate the content, pedagogical, and professional knowledge and skills identified in the SHAPE America Standard and to demonstrate competency on the multiple assessment measures of chapters 24:53:04, 24:53:05, and 24:53:06.
