Health Education Teaches Skills for a Healthy Life
State law requires teaching knowledge, attitudes, and skills for making health-promoting decisions and healthy behaviors.
Administrative Rules of Montana 10.53.701 Health Content Standard
(1) The content Standard for health are that students:
- (a) comprehend concepts related to health promotion and disease prevention to enhance personal health;
- (b) analyze the influence of family, peers, culture, media, technology, and other factors on health behaviors;
- (c) demonstrate the ability to access valid information, products, and services to enhance health;
- (d) demonstrate the ability to use interpersonal communication skills to enhance health and avoid or reduce health risks;
- (e) demonstrate the ability to use decision-making skills to enhance health and safety;
- (f) demonstrate the ability to use goal-setting skills to enhance health;
- (g) demonstrate the ability to practice health-enhancing behaviors and avoid or reduce health risks; and
- (h) demonstrate the ability to advocate for personal, family, and community health.
Administrative Rules of Montana 10.55.1301 Health Enhancement Program Delivery Standard
(1) In general, a basic health enhancement program shall:
-
(a) meet the following conditions:
-
(i) maintain class size in accordance with other curriculum areas;
-
(ii) focus on the knowledge and skills necessary to maintain a healthy lifestyle;
-
(iii) integrate and include components of the traditional "health" and "physical education" disciplines;
-
(iv) maintain a program that meets the educational requirements of health enhancement; and
-
(v) maintain adequate first aid materials and communication device capabilities.

(b) include the following practices:
-
(i) make appropriate use of technology in the curriculum;
-
(ii) give students the decision-making tools to promote personal and community responsibility;
-
(iii) address the physical, emotional, social, and intellectual dimensions of a healthy lifestyle; and
-
(iv) promote physical activity as a means to a healthy lifestyle.
